UB Deli

The UB Deli is a landmark place in Ulaanbaatar, being on top of an Internet Cafe and Art Gallery. It provides an American style Deli type eating establishment (even though the chef, Joel, is English). It is also a moderately popular place for expatriates to meet, more so in the winter than the summer. There is no outside seating at the UB Deli which reduces somewhat the summer clientele. The UB Deli cheeseburger is served with chips - nice big chunky ones in the English style. The burger itself consists of a bun, cheese, thick meat patty, lettuce and tomato. For the record, Thomo washed this one down with a strawberry milkshake.

This is an excellent burger. The meat patty is ground beef and is cooked through. Cheese is melted over the top of the meat patty from the heat within the patty itself. The bun is a toasted Kaiser bun, which has a moist texture. The UB Deli chips are a treat, tasting and with a texture similar to those found in England.

Baagi has not rated this burger yet - but his opinion will be forthcoming. The burger here costs 4,900 tugrigs, slightly pricey for Ulaanbaatar standards however the cheeseburger here is good value in that it is very filling. Thomo enjoyed it and would return for further burgers in the future. Joel quite often has a blackboard special of a double cheeseburger (double the meat, double the cheese) for a few tugrigs more from time to time.

Baagi comments on the UB Deli Burger - 27 October 2005: Whilst Thomo had slipped back into the country midweek, when heading to lunch Baagi and I went through the usual "where do you want to eat today?" "Oh, I don't know, up to you!" "But I picked yesterday" conversation. So, as he had to collect something from Mongolian Properties, which is next door to the UB Deli, we decided on the Deli. Baagi had the cheeseburger - actually, so did Thomo :-)

Baagi's comments about the UB Deli Cheeseburger were "damn, this bun is nice, so's the burger. This definitely rates higher than a Millie's but lower than a California - but only on quantity. Hmm, I am not sure whether it is slightly better or slightly worse than a Dave's Place. Slightly below I think .... until we have a chance to try one from there again.

On the strength of that, the UB Deli Cheeseburger maintains it's position in the rankings.

Thomo comments on the UB Deli Burger - 18 May 2006: I took a burger from the UB Deli tonight. The changes since Joel has left are basically in the chips that are served with the burger and with the bun. The burger is still good, the meat excellent but it just fails to be as good as it was before. The current burger is photographed below - this time on the camera built into a Samsung D500 mobile phone. The burger meal now looks like:
